landed Shamgar standing with a foot on either side of Adair's chest. Mahershala's warrior threw himself up, catching Shamgar around the waist and pulling him to the ground.

 

     It was Adair, now, who towered over his enemy. Slash! Adair's sword struck toward the chest of Shamgar. Twisting quickly to the right, Shamgar was cut across his left shoulder. The wound wasn't deep, but it drew blood. Putting off the pain in his left shoulder, Shamgar yelled into the air the call of a warrior, "Ahhhhhhhhhh!"

 

     "Tim!" cried Sally. Adair looked at her; bitterness laced every muscle of his face. He had won the prize, so he thought. The head of Shamgar would be his trophy. Adair's pride was his undoing. When he looked away from Shamgar, grimacing at the woman, Shamgar seized the opportunity. The Talyarian knight struck his right foot swiftly and mightily into the ankle of his adversary.

 

     As Adair stumbled forward, dropping his sword to the ground, Shamgar sprang to his feet. Reaching desperately to regain his sword, Adair clutched it from the ground. Drawing a knife with his left hand, he now had the advantage of two weapons in this life and death struggle. "Die!" he shouted. Running like a mad bull, he attacked the wounded Shamgar again and again with the blades of his weapons...

     "What sorcery brought you to us?" cried Adair.

 

     "No sorcery," answered Aldorn.

 

     The agent of Mahershala spotted the hawk sitting on the branch of a large oak. "So the two of you will serve me up for lunch?"

 

     "No," replied Shamgar. "This matter is between your sword and mine." Adair sprang at Shamgar. Their swords danced and flashed in the light of a full moon. Lunging and falling back, the two warriors fought, the steel of their swords ringing their clashing combat into the night. A huge fallen tree, at least fifty feet long, extended on the ground. Jumping onto the dead tree,  Adair was instantly met by Shamgar's sword as he somersaulted through the air. Adair, losing his balance, fell backwards as the force of Shamgar's sword struck against his. Another somersault through the air
