So what’s the point? My friends in Christ, people are dying around us everyday... at work... in our neighborhoods... at schools... and perhaps in our families.
They are dying the worst of all deaths–they are dying spiritually. Indeed, they may never have been alive, but remain dead in their sins from the day of their birth.
Christ died and rose from the grave so that our friends at work, at school, in the neighborhood, along with family members, might be made alive.
You and I, and all members of the living Church, are the pipelines of life to those who walk in death. OUR TRAP is that we can begin to so enjoy the trip downs the stream of years, and all the pleasures that come to us day by day, that we no longer care that people are dying... that people are dead... that people we know will be eternally separated from God.
And I know that there are some here today that are deeply troubled about a son, daughter, relative or friend who is not active in worship. You’d give up almost anything if this person would return to the Lord! Your cherish the Gospel and seek it’s benefits for all you know and love... this too, is Christian stewardship.
Christian stewardship is nothing more... is nothing less... than treasuring the Gospel so much that it becomes our driving force for life.
Remember what our Lord Jesus said, that where your treasure is, there is your heart also. It follows naturally from this that when your heart is centered in the Gospel, the Gospel becomes your treasure.
Before we go any further, let’s be very clear about WHAT WE MEAN BY “GOSPEL.” We talk about it all the time, so let’s make sure that we understand what it means Simply said, the Gospel is the good news that God the Father, in great love for us, sent His Son into the world to die the death that sinners deserve... sinners like us, and then rose from death so that believers might be born anew and gain eternal life.
Imagine with me that you find a great treasure chest as you are digging a hole in your back yard for a new tree you were planning to plant. You take the chest out of the ground and you see golden capital letters inscribed on the top saying, ‘THE GOSPEL.” What would you expect to find inside?
Seriously, what do you think the treasure chest holding “the Gospel” would have Inside? What would you see inside as you opened the lid of the Gospel treasure chest? |
