Certainly this was a time for God to act by filling in the holes within His church–a mighty ark intended to sail through time, saving souls.  God did indeed act! The God who was, who is, and who always will be reached into history to reform His church. We call this period of history “The Reformation.” God did not discontinue the church and start a new one, rather He took the corrupted Church and brought from it a remnant used to build a new, reformed church.

The Reformation is marked by many figures as they sought to help purify the church. John Hus was burned at the stake by the Roman Church for his opposition to corrupted doctrines. Martin Luther followed John Hus. Luther believed that he also might be put to death in much the same way as Hus. Instead, through much daring and danger, Dr. Luther became instrumental in bringing about reformation within the church.

Through Luther God “dug up” the Gospel that had been buried by the church under needless rituals and good works. Salvation was again the gift of God through the saving work of Jesus Christ. The Bible became the norm for faith, giving us the Means of Grace in Word and Sacrament.
