8. From the Catechism write out question 179 (not the scriptures).

Jesus once told the twelve apostles: “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?

It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men, You are the light of the world.           A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your father in heaven.”

The Reformation was sparked by the loss of the Gospel. Instead of salvation coming by grace through faith, which is the Gospel in a nutshell, works were added that needed to be done by us in order to be saved. Young Luther felt that he could never add enough good deeds to the grace of God so that his personal sins were washed away. He despaired of life. He even hinted that for a time he felt hate toward God. Before rediscovering the Gospel, Luther had seen God as a taskmaster that he could never satisfy. Religion had lost its saltiness. It was not flavored with the love of God.

became salty with good deeds. The Gospel

changed his entire life! Armed with the Gospel

Luther was willing to risk even death in order to

give testimony to his faith. He became a great

light of the Reformation.

How can you be salty and light for the Gospel within your situation?
